Synopsis

Elizabeth (Naomi Watts) never met her mother and never wanted to. She’s become a driven career woman with nobody to answer to – until an affair with Paul (Samuel L Jackson) leads to an unwanted pregnancy. Karen (Annette Bening) was 14 when her mother forced her to give her baby up for adoption. Years later, Karen has not forgotten but she still can't find the strength to go against her mother's will. Lucy (Kerry Washington) is desperate to adopt in order to save her marriage. Her world comes crashing down when her husband leaves – until she hears of a newborn baby with no relatives.

As Karen decides to face her demons by looking for her daughter, Elizabeth finally finds the peace she strived for through this unwilling pregnancy and the strength to forgive, by looking for her mother. Lucy learns that she truly wants to be a mother – and not because of society’s pressures.

MOTHER AND CHILD is a moving tale about the choices we make, the chances we miss, the opportunities we seize and the power of the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child.
